This month’s featured new production from the Touchstone listing of performances of Shakespeare plays (www.touchstone.bham.ac.uk) is:
Hamlet by the Ninagawa Company at the Barbican Theatre, London. As part of the celebrations of his 80th birthday Yukio Ninagawa will direct a version of Hamlet in Japanese with English surtitles.
Hamlet is played by Tatsuya Fujiwara who, in 2003, was the youngest ever Japanese Hamlet at the age of 21.
Ninagawa has had an illustrious history of directing Shakespeare including Stratford productions of King Lear with Nigel Hawthorne in 1999 and a Japanese Titus Andronicus in 2006. He will have directed the entire canon in 2016.
Nigel Hawthorne’s annotated script of Lear is held in the Shakespeare Institute Library. For more on Ninagawa see the chapter by Alexander Huang in volume 18 of Great Shakespeareans (PR 2965).
Hamlet is on from 21-24 May 2015. Box office: 020 7638 8891. www.barbican.org.uk.
